What are Hooks For?

Hooks are effective leverage action to ring bits. A ring bit traditionally applies only direct action pressure to the mouth when pressure is exerted on the reins, the same amount of pressure is exerted on the mouth. The mouthpiece is pulled backward and upward towards the riders hands. With hooks, the reins and bridle have a fixed attatchment to the ring and allow the bit to work more like a leverage bit. When reins are pulled backward the bottom of the ring lifts and the mouthpiece rolls downward and backward in the mouth, while the ring subtly pulls the bridle downward towards the poll. The action effectively encourages the horses to relax at the poll.

Are Hooks legal in competition?

The acceptance of hooks in competition depends on the governing organisation's rules. As with any bit, you should check with a competitions governing bodys rules in regards to what mouthpieces and cheeks styles are legal.

How do you properly attach a bit with hooks?

With the hook design, rein and bridle attachment is easy. Reins: Insert the rein from outside the cheek through the bottom slot in the ring and fasten. The rein will wrap around the outside of the ring. Bridle: Insert bridle cheek from outside the bit cheek through the top slot in the ring and fasten. The bridle will wrap around the outside of the ring.

What are the different levels?

Level 1: For horses beginning training or little training, or is learning basic gaits transitions and obedience. Level one bits restrict the tongue and are designed to communicate with the horse that has little or no training.

Level 2:For horses with basic training established and aids in relaxing the poll, and establishing bending collection and lead changes.  This level of bit works accross the tongue and is designed to communicate with the horse that has basic training and is now learning advanced skills.

Level 3: Are considered advanced in skills, works well of seat, legs and hands and also relaxes at the poll. This level of bit offers the most tongue relief and is designed to communicate with the highly reliable finished horse.
